Comparison of paper mulch *WeedGuardPlus®
and plastic mulches; impacts of various mulch types on Rosa Bianca eggplant productivity
Conclusions: Mulching Rosa Bianca eggplant increased productivity in comparison to no mulching. Both paper and black plastic mulches increased number of fruits per plant, yield per plant and average fruit weight in comparison to no mulch. In addition, mulching eggplants with either WeedGuardPlus® paper mulch or black plastic resulted in harvest dates nearly a month earlier when compared to plants with no mulch, extending the time that a farmer can market eggplants. Although paper mulch did tend to rip more than black plastic mulch, there were no significant differences in measures of plant productivity. Because paper mulch can be left in the field to biodegrade, whereas black plastic mulch must be removed in organic systems, paper mulch could be considered less labor intensive and better for the environment.
